tap dancing is like eating ice cream

Whether it’s Broadway tap or, my favorite, rhythm tap, it is one of the most exhilarating forms of dance because it’s both visual and aural. When I’m having a rough day, being able to tap gives me such joy. The rhythms of tap have a way of diametrically calming and stimulating your psyche.

Some days my balance is poor, so I hold onto a support. It’s very difficult, if not impossible, to dance next to a barre or with a walker when you’re doing modern or jazz or ballet. But, with tap dance you can still create rhythms with your feet even if you can’t leap or jump or do wings. Tap dance wings are a fun advanced step that is also great to watch. Go to youtube and search for tap dance wings; you will find several teachers demonstrating various versions.

Even when you are learning the basics it is great fun and totally satisfying. I’ll write again and list some of the companies you will want to see perform, so you can look up their work on youtube–isn’t youtube grand :). Rhapsody In Taps is one of my favorite of all dance companies. If you click on the link, you can view the video of one of their pieces that will demonstrate what rhythm tap looks like at the height of its artistic form.

I hope to get together a group on the breast cancer road who want to dance along the way. We can do riffs and the crawl and paddle and roll and so much more. I guarantee that no matter what, you will be smiling the entire time because tap dancing is like eating ice cream: you cannot do it without smiling.
