a movie for ponderers

A day out at the movies. It was a perfect day requiring not much energy and as lovely as possible. We went to a movie that is nothing short of, as my husband described it, visual poetry, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. It does not have wide distribution but is playing in Los Angeles, so we went to see it on a very large screen. It was worth the extra money as the cinematography is sublime.

I will say this: if you dislike a movie that leaves much for you to interpret, see another movie. It leaves all the interpretation to the viewer. It is spiritual and philosophical, dynamic and beautiful. I think every time I see it, I will come away with something different, and I know I will watch it many more times. Marvin and I could not stop talking about it after we left. We can’t wait to see it again.

Interestingly, we saw more people leave the theater before seeing even a quarter of the film than we have ever seen for any viewing.
