smiling

she asked and i said
metastatic breast cancer
smiling
she touched my hand
softly
i saw a tear fall

excusing herself
she left the room
returned shortly
smiling
handed me a book
on hospice

i thanked her
returned home
sobbed for eternity
then dumped the book
in the garbage
smiling
