Today was the start of my holiday music experience. I will admit that when it comes to this time of the year, I love nothing more than listening to every version of Tchaikovsky‘s Nutcracker. Luckily, Ovation TV is now in its fifth year of hosting the Battle of the Nutcrackers, so not only can I listen to various versions on Spotify, I can watch five companies perform this ballet. The fun of watching the Battle is seeing productions that are both traditional and avant-garde. This year will follow suit. The Battle will air Monday through Friday this week, starting today. As in the past, voters will choose their favorite Nutcracker by voting at the Ovation site.
Also, for the first time the New York City Ballet is collaborating with NCM Fathom to present George Balanchine’s Nutcracker Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at local movie theaters across the US. Balanchine is one of the most important choreographers of all time, and the annual production of the NYC Ballet’s Nutcracker popularized the ballet, turning it into the first financially successful annual ballet.
Even if you’re not afflicted with Nutcracker fever as I am, you should still check out one of the performances. You might become a fan of the ballet. Or you might just start dreaming of sugar plum fairies and tours jetés.
